Ballechin Edradour Burgundy matured
It is young and showing great promise. Keep watching this with interest.
Douglas Laing Ardbeg 1992 12 Years Old, Rum Finish, Park Avenue Liquors
With smoked salmon and a squeeze of lemon.
Douglas Laing Ben Nevis 9 Years Old
Douglas Laing Benrinnes 1990 14 Years Old, Single Cask Sherry Finish
Beautifully full flavoured whisky. Manages to be both elegant and robustly expressive. Very appetising.
Douglas Laing Bladnoch 15 Years Old
Not a very exciting whisky. Too edgy. Not delivering much on the palate. And lacking finesse. A bland cask?
Douglas Laing Bladnoch 22 Years Old
Good balance of the fruity acidity and sweeter juicy notes.
Douglas Laing Bowmore 20 Years Old
Bowmore is a great malt. let's see more of it in straightforward ages.
Douglas Laing Caol Ila 1979 25 Years Old
An attractive character. Phenolic but with much more.
Douglas Laing Caol Ila 1979 26 Years Old, The Whisky Fair
Should have been taken out of the cask a few years back. Easy to say now of course.
Douglas Laing Clan Denny Islay
Douglas Laing Dallas Dhu 24 Years Old
Much more herbal than other bottlings of Dallas Dhu.
Douglas Laing Highland Park 16 Years Old
For the end of the evening. Of considerable complexity and will require several attempts before it’s cracked. Not for everyone.
Douglas Laing King of Scots, 25 Years Old
Douglas Laing Laphroaig 15 Years Old, 1987
A lean and lively Laphroaig, more smoky than seaweedy. The flavours are long and persistent. Enjoyable, more-ish and appetising.
Douglas Laing Laphroaig 16 Years Old, Limburg Whisky Fair Bottling
At first, I did not recognise this as a Laphroaig. Then I thought that age must have muted its attack, but 16 is scarcely venerable. Can a whisky be an old fogey?
Douglas Laing Laphroaig 17 Years Old
An unusual Laphroaig. No trace of the medicinal character. Water brings out sweet malty notes and more smoke. Why such a difference? Cask influence? Different peating level in the malt? Puzzling.
Douglas Laing Linkwood 16 Years Old
A classic malty beast. Well balanced. A winter warmer to enjoy with nuts and crispy nibbles.
Douglas Laing Mortlach 1992 12 Years Old, Sherry Finish
Urbane. Austere.
Douglas Laing Port Ellen 25 Years Old
Forget your herbal tea. Go for this fantastic Islay potion!
Douglas Laing Rosebank 15 Years Old
A straightforward refreshing dram. To be sipped on a summer afternoon. I would easily drop one or two ice cubes in my glass.
Douglas Laing Rosebank 1974 20 Years Old, The Whisky Fair
Who needs afternoon tea?
Douglas Laing St Magadalene 23 Years Old
Interesting but a sweet note too far maybe but the finish gets a grip on itself and leaves a clean minty freshness. Recommended for sweet tooth.
Douglas Laing The Macallan 16 Years Old, Burgundy Finish, The Vintage House
A real finesse, some thinness too. But Twiggy was a popular model in her time, wasn’t she?
Old & Rare Lochnagar, 33 Years Old
Full but very well balanced for such an ancient character.
Old & Rare Platinum Ben Nevis
Just about holds its own against the effects of excessive age. On the cusp!
Old & Rare Platinum Glen Garioch 35 Years Old
This has lasted superbly for its age, proof that Glen Garioch is a seriously impressive malt, one that improves with lengthy maturation.
Old & Rare Platinum Millburn 34 Years Old
Luxurious. An adult taste.
Old & Rare Platinum The Macallan (Sherry Finish), 28 Years Old
Old & Rare Platinum The Macallan 1977 27 Years Old
This is a very decent example of an independent bottling.
Old & Rare Platinum The Macallan, 28 Years Old
Have this without water. Hinting at complexity.
Old Malt Cask Ardbeg 15 Years Old
Old Malt Cask Ardbeg 15 Years Old
Too chimney-like for me. Lacks the balance between sweetness and dryness you need in such a peaty dram.
Old Malt Cask Ardbeg 15 Years Old
Old Malt Cask Ardbeg 24 Years Old
Full of flavour and complexity, but less challenging than some Ardbegs. More peaty than the bottling reviewed among new releases. Some woodiness
Old Malt Cask Ardbeg 28 Years Old, The Ardbeggeddon 1972, Sherry Cask
One of the best Ardbegs I have ever tasted. Full range of the distillery’s typical flavours, lyrically combined.
Old Malt Cask Ardmore 1977 30 Years Old
Has maturity and presence. Ardmore:a complete package.
Old Malt Cask Auchentoshan 1978
Promising nose. Palate hard to tame, disappointing.
Old Malt Cask Auchentoshan 21 Years Old
Old Malt Cask Auchroisk, 44 Years Old
Old Malt Cask Aultmore 1989, 16 Years Old
Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing bad with this it’s just amazingly bland.
Old Malt Cask Bladnoch 16 Years Old
Old Malt Cask Bowmore 10 Years Old
Old Malt Cask Bowmore 1991, 12 Years Old
Lightweight, but very drinkable.
Old Malt Cask Brora 18 Years Old
More Islay-like than its Clynelish brothers. Was this some of the last made with highly peated malt?
Old Malt Cask Caol Ila 1991, 12 Years Old
Conclusion: Another perfectly fine Coal Ila, but nothing to blow the mind.
Old Malt Cask Clynelish 1971, 30 Years Old
There’s more in the nose than in the finish. A really characterful malt. Interesting. This is one of the more medicinal expressions of Clynelish I have come across.
Old Malt Cask Clynelish 23 Years Old
All comes together at the end.
Old Malt Cask Clynelish, 23 Years Old
Old Malt Cask Convalmore 30 Years Old 1976
Shows maturity but very front loaded.
Old Malt Cask Dalmore 14 Years Old
Old Malt Cask Director's Tactical Selection, 18 Years Old
This has it all but goes about it in an unflashy manner. Good.
Old Malt Cask Dufftown 30 Years Old 1977
Has a cleanliness and delicacy but lacking in impact overall. You expect complexity from old whiskies.
Old Malt Cask Glen Grant 12 Years Old Wine Finish
Seems cobbled together.
Old Malt Cask Glen Ord 18 Years Old
Old Malt Cask Glencadam 21 Years Old 1985
Well balanced and with real charm and some complexity.
Old Malt Cask Glenglassaugh 30 Years Old
Another whose palate runs counter to its nose.
Old Malt Cask Glengoyne 16 Years Old
Old Malt Cask Glenugie 25 Years Old
Old Malt Cask Glenury Royal 32 Years Old
Old Malt Cask Highland Park 10 Years Old
Utterly delicious, but the sherry masks the peat and salt.
Old Malt Cask Highland Park Sherry Cask Premium, 29 Years Old
Old Malt Cask Laphroaig 12 Years Old
Old Malt Cask Laphroaig 16 Years Old
Good all-round Laphroaig. Sound stuff.
Old Malt Cask Laphroaig 17 Years Old, Rum Finish
Confident. Slightly austere.
Old Malt Cask Laphroaig 18 Years Old
This has balance. Like it.
Old Malt Cask Laphroaig 1985 17 Years Old
This seems far less lively and rounded than the 1987 whisky bottled in 1992.
Old Malt Cask Longmorn 15 Years Old
Old Malt Cask North Port 36 Years Old
Of interest to collectors, historians and the likes of me, but this Brechin brew, staunched in 1983, never made a great whisky.
Old Malt Cask Port Ellen 1978 24 Years Old
This one blew up a storm for me.
Old Malt Cask Port Ellen 1979 Sherry Cask 21 Years Old
Port Ellen had such a distinctive character. This seems to be one of the less robust bottlings, yet has some character.
Old Malt Cask Port Ellen 1982 21 Years Old
A big beast of a Port Ellen, nicely caught before the sherry-wood tipped it over the edge.
Old Malt Cask Port Ellen Sherry Cask, 25 Years Old
Old Malt Cask Rosebank Wine Finish, 16 Years Old
Old Malt Cask Scapa 13 Years Old
Light and discreet. Perfectly pleasant but not exactly exciting.
Old Malt Cask Scapa, 16 Years Old
Old Malt Cask St Magdalene, 24 Years Old
If this was in a better cask it would have been a rather pleasant whisky.
Old Malt Cask Tactical 23 Years Old
Old Malt Cask Talisker 20 Years Old, Director’s Tactical
The distillery character is buried far below the wood. One can hardly detect even a light puff of smoke. Water does not help.
Old Malt Cask The Macallan (Rum Finish), 12 Years Old
All rather insubstantial but attractive enough though.
Provenance Ardmore 12 Years Old
Provenance Arran 10 Years Old
Provenance Auchentoshan, 10 Years Old
Provenance Blair Athol 12 Years Old, Sherry
Provenance Braeval 1996, 8 Years Old, Sherry finish
More attractive on the nose than on the palate. Water spreads it thin.
Provenance Clynelish, 10 Years Old
Provenance Isle of Arran 8 Years Old
A dellicate but satisfyingly complex dram. Arran has been getting better and better, perhaps this will be the optimum age.
Provenance Isle of Arran 8 Years Old, Unchillfiltered
Uncomplicated but delicious.
Provenance Laphroaig, 8 Years Old
Provenance Lochnagar 1994
That guy hides a tender heart under a reserved manner. Give it time and a dash of fresh water. Definitely an outdoor dram.
Provenance Rosebank 12 Years Old
Provenance The Glenrothes 13 Years Old
Large, yet complex. A lovely example of this outstanding Speyside whisky which still has far too low a profile.
Rare Extra Old King of Scots
