Alcohol is so well tamed. A fully Islay vatted malt. Vatted, really? More a single than a vatted. Or an Ardbeg vatted with a Laphroaig?

• James MacArthur Allt-a-Bhainne 1995 10 Years Old

Quite harsh and burning. Alcohol is not tamed at all.

• James MacArthur Auchentoshan 10 Years Old

I have not previously encountered such a full expression of Auchentoshan, but the style suits the whisky.

• James MacArthur Bladnoch 12 Years Old

Gentle to the point of reticence. Aperitif. Or try it with Morrocan food.

Pleasant fruitiness on the nose but the palate is somewhat dour and one dimensional.

This bottling strongly manifests the woody dryness that seems to characterise the whiskies from the Islay valley. Water brings out Strathmill's muscat note.

Sophisticated flavours in a delicate structure. Like elaborate petits-fours.

A two-sided malt, with two different expressions on the nose and on the palate. The alcohol needs to be tamed with water.

Quite assertive for Bladnoch. Not keen on the papery character. Quality of wood?
